Yes. The New York Attorney General's office says home improvement contractors must be licensed in Nassau and Suffolk counties, along with New York City, Westchester, Putnam and Rockland. The license comes from the county where the house is, not from the state.
Nassau's licensing FAQ exempts plumbers, electricians, architects and engineers from the home improvement license only while they work in their own licensed trade. In Nassau, the towns, cities and villages license plumbers and electricians, so a bathroom job can involve two different licenses.
Nassau County's consumer checklist calls a down payment under 15 percent fair. The Attorney General's office says never to pay the full price upfront and to hold back the final payment until the work is done.
No. It is free for homeowners. Contractors can pay to be featured, and featured listings are labeled on the page.
